Who’s the voice?

You know that voice you hear inside your head, the one that talks to you ALL the time? Don’t worry, you’re not alone, we all hear it. When I was young, influenced by the cartoon shows I watched, I used to imagine the voice as mini me, split into two; one dressed as an angel and one as a devil floating right above my shoulders, one encouraging me to do the “right” thing and the other pushing me to do the “wrong” thing. Little did I know back then that this was not mini me, this was in fact a much larger part of me.

I have come to learn that this “voice” is a product of my creation and as its boss, I can change what it says.

I now understand that it is I who gives orders to the voice inside, and it echoes back to me. I can make this voice my biggest supporter, or I can make it my worst critic. You see, there’s a choice we make every single day that we may not be consciously aware of: to be the masters of our thoughts, or to let thoughts be our masters.

When you’re driving in your car and a song you don’t like comes up on the radio, do you stay tuned into that station, or do you simply change the frequency and find a song you like? It can be the same with our thoughts, if only we recognize that we control the frequency and we have the power to switch a thought, on and off. Yet, we often torture ourselves and live in the illusion that we are the victims of our thoughts, imprisoned in our own minds.

Think about someone you truly care about, a best friend perhaps. Now imagine if you spoke to this special person the same way you sometimes speak to yourself internally. Would you ever say: “You’re so fat, it’s disgusting”, “look at all those wrinkles, you’re getting old!”, “you are not smart enough”, or “everyone will make fun of you”. In my model of the world, people who love each other never say these things to one another. Yet, if we were to tune into the inward voice of many people around us, we’ll sadly find that those are the kinds of things they are continuously repeating to themselves. Why would we ever choose to walk around and live our lives with a judgmental and critical voice whispering, and sometimes roaring, in our heads? It is likely because we think we don’t have a choice, but we absolutely do.

Take control of the voice and let it know who’s boss. Self-love starts with the way we choose to speak to ourselves, so choose kindness, choose compassion, choose love.
